Le 1er juillet 2008, le tribunal fédéral de New York a ordonné à Google de fournir au géant américain des médias Viacom, des données relatives aux utilisateurs de sa filiale YouTube. En 2007, Viacom avait engagé des poursuites contre le site de partage de vidéos, l'accusant de violation de la propriété intellectuelle pour avoir laissé ses utilisateurs mettre en ligne des vidéos issues des programmes de MTV et de Comedy Central. Au terme de cette décision, Google devra fournir la base de « logging » de YouTube, qui contient le pseudo de connexion des utilisateurs, leurs adresses IP, l'heure du début de lecture de chaque vidéo et l'identifiant des vidéos.
