Le 10 mai 2007, le gouvernement belge a adopté une loi sur la transsexualité. Dorénavant, tout belge ou étranger inscrit aux registres de la population peut déclarer à l'officier d'état civil, sa conviction intime d'appartenir au sexe opposé. Les mineurs non émancipés doivent être assistés de leur mère, de leur père ou de leur représentant légal. Lors de la déclaration, l'intéressé remet à l'officier d'état civil une déclaration du psychiatre et du chirurgien attestant qu'il a la conviction intime, constante et irréversible d'appartenir au sexe opposé, qu'il a subi une réassignation sexuelle qui le fait correspondre au sexe opposé et qu'enfin il n'est plus en mesure de concevoir des enfants conformément à son sexe opposé. Quelques jours plus tard, le gouvernement belge a également modifié sa législation sur la mention du sexe d'un enfant souffrant d'ambiguïté...
