Le Sénat du New Jersey a voté le 10 décembre 2007 un projet de loi qui abolit la peine de mort. Celle-ci sera remplacée par une peine d'emprisonnement à vie sans remise de peine, ni libération conditionnelle. La Chambre basse de l'Etat américain, à majorité démocrate, devrait se prononcer le 13 décembre 2007 sur ce texte. Le gouverneur démocrate du New Jersey a promis de promulguer la loi avant janvier 2008. C'est la première fois qu'un Etat a choisi d'utiliser la procédure parlementaire plutôt que judiciaire pour interdire la peine de mort depuis que la Cour suprême l'avait de nouveau autorisée en 1976. Enfin, il est à noter que 21 des 50 Etats...
